BLINKERED THINKER

A viewpoint that’s “blinkered” (i.e., limited in range or outlook).

RELIGION: ONLY GOOD ON THE LEFT

Burns Strider, blogger?, former Congressional staffer, and Democratic religious issues advisor, is joining Hillary Clinton as she coquettishly plays the will-I-or-won’t-I game for the ‘08 presidential race. Strider works for the Democrats’ Faith Working Group and House Democratic Caucus. The latter group worked in various states around the country during the past election campaign, to woo religious voters who might otherwise align themselves with the execrable religious right. Recently, Naomi “Al, It’s All About Earth Tones” Wolf had this to say about the Religious Righters:

So the last thing we need in America is a theocracy – more imposition of religion DIRECTLY into politics. Please bear with me, I will get to how you then advance your mission. But keep always in mind that it is far from reassuring to Jews or other religious minorities to imagine that the extreme right-wing Christian base – Karl Rove’s people – say, 30% of the electorate, dead set on remaking America into an extreme theocracy – might be flanked by or even swayed by another 21% of the electorate made up of moderate Christians, seeking a more moderate Christian theocracy. It might be a kinder, gentler theocracy a nightmare for the rest of us and for the American ideal itself: with those numbers, the American separation of Church and State would effectively be at a standstill.

No doubt, Hillary is extremely concerned about the extreme religious right, so the plan is to inject her speeches and public statements with enough God-speak to get the attention of religious voters and, with the help of Mr. Burns, work with lefty faith-based groups in the battleground states. Blinkered Thinker would call it religion-lite, a faith that’s only personal, unless you’re running for public office.
