Record temps in Chicago led race officials to cancel the annual marathon at mile 20. From the Chicago Tribune comes this howler:
“Why did they cancel it at Mile 20? Couldn’t they cancel it at Mile 5,” said Arzu Karimova, 28, a market researcher from Chicago. “I put my entire summer into this. My entire marathon is gone. I’ll never have another first marathon experience.”
It isn’t a marathon until the race is finished, at least by someone. Poor Mr. Karimova will still be able to have a “first marathon,” it just won’t be today. His entire marathon isn’t gone.
The news story is here.
UPDATE A later Chicago Trib web piece has come out about the confirmed death and scores of hospitalizations of runners related to the extreme heat during today’s marathon. The earlier post about the complaining solipsist was not intended to ridicule those persons with medical conditions, since details had not been made available. BT’s sympathy is for the victims.
